In this episode of The White Coat Entrepreneur, I have my former fellow, Dr. Matthew Urban, to discuss training, mentorship, and launching a private facial plastic surgery practice straight out of fellowship. Dr. Urban shares how his interest developed during residency through rhinoplasty and facial aesthetic cases. While initially considering academics, his path shifted as he pursued healthcare administration and finance training. During his fellowship, he built a pro forma, studied market demand, and planned his practice setup, work that helped him secure financing despite early rejections and uncertainty. As I often share with fellows, success doesn’t happen by chance; you have to have a roadmap and a path early on.
We also discuss early practice-building, referrals, outreach, call coverage, and building trust, along with the importance of viewing team-building as an investment. Now, early in his career, Dr. Urban reflects that he would choose this path again for the autonomy and fulfillment it provides.
